The incident took place in New Haven County around 10 a.m., Sunday, March 20 at a Milford home on Housatonic Drive.

As patrol units arrived, they discovered Sean Stroomer outside the residence suffering from one gunshot wound to the back, said the Milford Police.

As officers were rendering aid to Stroomer, a man, later identified as Eric Stoughton emerged from the home. Stoughton, whose age was not released by police, was identified by a witness as the shooter, police said.

He was taken into custody, without incident.

Although further analysis is required for confirmation, a weapon presumed to have been used to commit the shooting was recovered near the primary scene of the crime with two expended shell casings, police said.

Stroomer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound to the back. Emergency room officials characterized his injury as “non-life-threatening”, and his condition as “stable," they added.

An investigation found that the altercation began as verbal and escalated significantly, resulting in the shooting, police said.

There is no significant call history from the residence, they added.

Stoughton was charged with:

  • Criminal attempt to commit murder
  • Assault
  • Criminal attempt to commit assault
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm

He is being held on a $750,000 bond.
